- How should I feed my cat?
- Meal feeding is the only way to control calories / portions.
- Three meals per day will work for most households
- Before you leave for the day
- When you get home
- Before you go to bed
- The total amount of food should be divided among the three meals.
- If you have more than one cat, put only "what you can turn your back on" in each cat's bowl.
- How much should I feed?
- Measure exactly how much food your cat is actually eating in a 24 hour period.(include everything !)
- Measure the food for several days to get the average amount.
- Reduce the amount of food you are feeding by 30 to 50% to achieve weight reduction.
- For the "average" cat, a combination of < 1/4 cup of dry and 3 ounces of canned is a ballpark amount.
- What kind of food should I feed?
- Choice of specific brand and type of food is dependent on the age and needs of the individual cat.
- All cats should receive a portion of their calories from canned food.
- Canned food more closely resembles a cat's natural diet.
- It has a larger percentage of its calories from protien and fat, more water, and lower calorie density.
- Dry food has its place, but you must not leave unlimited dry food available all day if you have a fat cat.
